Patience Jonathan Urges African First Ladies To Support Husbands

Nigeria's First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan on
Wednesday stressed the need for African first
ladies to support their husbands to enable them
to succeed in running affairs of state.
Jonathan made the call when she received the
wife of the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Roman
Abneh at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“We should not relent in our efforts at
supporting our spouses to make our continent
free of any form of violence.
“The challenges of terrorism, conflicts and war
have become global. We should work towards
supporting our husbands to achieve peace in
their various countries.
“I believe in dialogue because there is nothing
dialogue cannot achieve. Africa must develop
and we cannot afford these conflicts to take
over our continent.”
Jonathan appealed to her colleagues not to
relent in their efforts to attain peace on the
continent.
“It is high time for us as African first ladies to
take this peace initiative very seriously because
what affects one nation affects the other. If we
fail, we have failed our region, continent and
the world.
“Nigerian woman have been praying, organising
rallies and campaigning for peace in our country
and we believe God will answer us.
“As mothers, we have the responsibility of
guiding our children to follow the right path.”
She lauded Abneh’s initiative towards the
empowerment and uplift of Ethiopian women
and girls especially in the areas of health and
education.
Jonathan pledged support to the fight against
cancer and HIV and AIDS in that country.
Earlier, Abneh who accompanied her husband
on a two-day official visit to Nigeria, described
Jonathan as a role model to the African first
ladies.
She commended Jonathan’s commitment and
dedication towards women empowerment and
attainment of peace in Africa.

PDP Did Not Win Ekiti- Sani

The President of the Civil Rights Congress of
Nigeria and prominent northern-based rights
activist, Mallam Shehu Sani on Tuesday declared
that the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti
State was far from being free and fair as
adjudged.
Sani, in a statement to newsmen in Kaduna on
Tuesday, said the election could not be free and
fair when the government of the day used
security operatives to harass and intimidate
political opponents to favour the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party’s candidate, Mr. Ayo Fayose.
The CRC’s boss noted that in the run off to that
election, key APC figures, campaign managers as
well as government functionaries were arrested,
adding that credible elections must be devoid of
the use of force or coercion in any way.
The pro-democracy activist warned that what
happened in Ekiti must not happen in Osun
State in during the forthcoming governorship
poll in that state.
“The PDP did not win Ekiti; they captured Ekiti
through the strategy of force and inducement.
Governor Kayode Fayemi’s acceptance of defeat
is more for peace than for justice. Those in
Abuja reveling in the victory over APC are
simply toasting to the cruel triumph of might
over morality. The will of the people cannot be
said to be freely expressed with a record
military planes hovering over the skies of Ekiti
and soldiers on the ground,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to rise up against what he
described as ‘forces against democracy’ and be
ready, prepared to defend their votes against
the predatory ruling party backed by the state
apparatus.”
Sani, a senatorial aspirant on the platform of
the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC)
in Kaduna State, said democratic and
progressive forces in Nigeria should not tolerate
the repeat of the Ekiti episode in 2015:
He said, “Those who accepted, endorsed and
embraced Ekiti elections as free and fair are by
extension giving their imprint to the adoption
of it in the 2015 general elections.
“We fought and ended military rule in Nigeria.
We will not tolerate its return through the
backdoor. Drafting the military to supervise
elections position them to partisanship, drags
them into murky political waters and negatively
affect their professionalism.
“The Ekiti elections is neither free nor fair
irrespective of the acceptance of Governor
Kayode Fayemi. The cruelty and Brigandage by
the security apparatus in the days to the
election created an atmosphere of fear,
apprehension and intimidation that can in no
reasonable assessment be considered as fair

NDLEA Arrests School Children, Hotel Manager Over Drug Abuse

Operatives of the Kaduna State command of
the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA) on Tuesday said that it has arrested
11 secondary school children and manager of
a hotel in the state capital over alleged drug
abuse and trafficking.

The State Commander of the agency,
Mohammed Jibrin, disclosed this to newsmen
during an event marking the International Day
against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The theme for the celebration was, “A Message
of Hope: Drug Use Disorders Are Preventable
and Treatable.”
Jibrin said that the children; seven girls and four
boys, were arrested in a hotel room taking
psychotropic substance.

He revealed that eight of the arrested children
were still in junior classes, adding that their
parents had been invited to the command for
questioning and counselling, while the hotel
manager was still under investigation.

The commander disclosed that between January
and May 2014, the agency arrested 210 drug
suspects, including five women, with various
illicit drugs weighing over 1074.02kg.
He said that 80 of them, including a 78 year old
man from Zaria, have been convicted and were
serving various prison terms.

Jibrin said that the command had also
discovered and sealed an illegal laboratory in
Zaria, manufacturing fake drugs.
According to him, the laboratory produces drugs
from ordinary powder, expired chemicals and
substances that are detrimental to human
health.

He also disclosed that a total of 37 addicts have
been counselled, rehabilitated and reintegrated
back into the society at the agency’s
rehabilitation facility in Zaria.

Jibrin stressed the need for communities,
parents and other stakeholder to support the
fight against drug abuse and trafficking to
reduce the menace in the state.

Ekiti Elections: Jonathan Tasks PDP Leadership To Capture Osun, Lagos, Others

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday hailed
the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) for its efforts in bringing back Ekiti to the
PDP fold and urged it to bring back Lagos, Osun
and others.
Jonathan made the commendation when
members of PDP National Executive Committee
(NEC), led by its Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu,
visited him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to
congratulate him on the successful conduct of the
Ekiti elections.
The president challenged the PDP to continue to
work hard so as to ensure electoral victory for
the party in future elections in the country.
”At least, we have seen clearly that Ekiti is now a
PDP state. We pray that we will work very hard,
sell our ideas, our programmes, manifesto to
Nigerians so that we will accept us for what we
are.
We always say that we will not disappoint
Nigerians. We believe that we will even do more
in other states.”
Jonathan also commended members of the
security services, INEC and other stakeholders
for ensuring smooth and peaceful conduct of the
election.
‘‘Let me appreciate Nigerians for their
determination and patriotism for this country and
to reassure them that the PDP leadership will
continue to do its best for this country.
‘‘We are not chameleons, we don’t change, no
mutation in PDP, we don’t transform to all kinds
of characters and colours and shapes based on
circumstances, we are what we are and we will
continue to preach what we believe in and do our
best for this country,’’ he said.
The president reiterated the determination of his
administration to address all the socio-economic
challenges facing the country.
He, therefore, reassured that the PDP- led
Federal Government would continue to pursue the
ongoing transformation of all sectors of nation’s
economy, especially in the area of rail transport,
agriculture and education.
On security challenges, the president reassured
Nigerians that the problem of insurgency and
other social vices were being addressed, saying
insurgents would soon be crushed.
Earlier, Mu’azu had told the President that they
were in the Presidential Villa to congratulate him
over the electoral victory of the party in Ekiti last
Saturday.
He also thanked the president for his patience,
leadership, focus and support at all times.
Mu’azu said the election was conducted in a free,
fair and transparent manner that the result was
generally accepted by local and international
observers as well as the opposition party.
He thanked the president for ensuring internal
democracy in the PDP, adding that the Ekiti
electoral victory was a clear demonstration of the
president’s style of leadership.
According to him, the party will not have fielded
Ayodele Fayose as its governorship candidate in
the Ekiti elections, if it had considered the
Nigerian factor.
‘‘Fayose, ordinarily if the Nigerian factor comes in
will never have been our candidate but you and I
know that even after he emerged, the sort of
groups that came to report me that I have done
the wrong choice.
‘‘And more often when they are caught red-
handed coming to the Villa, Mr President will
insist that I must be there and I will say I have
seen the same people, I have explained to them,
Mr President will still insist for me to hear, to
listen that at the end of the day the truth will
prevail with the support of Mr President, hence
the choice ‘‘Because without getting our first
eleven, which is on very good support and
encouragement, we would not have been
celebrating today.’’

'Men of the Strip' Star Dead After Suicide Plunge

Nate Estimada -- one of the stars of the male revue
"Men of the Strip" -- committed suicide Wednesday
by driving his car off a cliff ... law enforcement
sources tell TMZ.Our sources say the 24-year old
Estimada drove his Mustang in a mountainous area
near the City of Industry in L.A. County during the
daytime Wednesday ... and accelerated off the cliff,
dropping at least 40 ft. into a landfill.We're told
authorities have determined the plunge was
intentional and they're conducting toxicology tests
to determine if drugs were in Estimada's system.A
rep for the show released a statement saying, "The

for your heartfelt condolences and expressions of

an unusual, 10-year protective order, requiring Cruz

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Reveals Past Battle With Depression: "I Was Crying Constantly"

The Rock can't be a rock sometimes.

Dwayne Johnson, the pro wrestler turned big screen
actor whose bicep alone is probably bigger than your
entire upper body, reveals in a candid interview with
The Hollywood Reporter (June 27 issue) that he's had
his fair share of struggles in the past—from getting
into trouble with the law as a teenager to getting
kicked out of his home at 14 to being dumped as a
professional football player—and Johnson admits it
ultimately led to depression.

"I didn't want to do a thing," he recalled. "I didn't want
to go anywhere. I was crying constantly. Eventually
you reach a point where you are all cried out."

After attempting to overcome numerous obstacles as
a young boy, The Rock decided to turn things around,
and at 18, he won a full football scholarship to the
University of Miami and was ecstatic when he was the
only freshman chosen to play, something very rare in
college football.

However, he began to sustain multiple injuries and
ended up dropping out of school without even taking
his midterms. Johnson saw himself going into a
downward spiral again, until his coach called and set
him straight. "He says, 'Get your ass in a car and
come back right now.' He was so embarrassed and
pissed. It's one thing when you go through an injury
and depression. It's another when you walk away and
say, 'F— it.' "

The Rock went back to school and continued to dream
of playing for the NFL. Unfortunately, when the draft
came, he wasn't picked. He went on to get signed by
the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders,
which was far less luxurious than what he pictured in
his mind, but it was something.

Until—yes, more unfortunate news—his coach told
him he was being cut. "You hear the words you never
want to hear as a player: 'Coach wants to see you.
Bring your playbook,' " said Johnson "There was no
injury. It's just, 'That's it. You're not good enough.'
That was very sobering."
That's when his second round of depression crept
back in. "The dreams I had, they're dashed," he
explained. "There is no more football. My relationship
was crushed. That was my absolute worst time...I
looked in my pocket, and I had seven bucks. Wow.
Seven bucks to my name."
However, all of Johnson's hardships is what helped
mold him into the man he is today—an action star with
a lucrative career that's far beyond anything he could
have imagined (his films made a whopping $1.3 billion
last year alone!).
Now if that doesn't inspire you, we don't know what
will.

Johnson also opened up about the moment he found
out his Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker passed
away from a fiery car crash.

"I was driving with Lauren [Hashian] when she
immediately turned very quiet and was looking at me,
studying, wondering if I knew," he recalled of that
November day.

"I pulled over and looked at my messages and had a
moment where I just caught my breath. We said a
prayer right then to give his daughter strength—
because we had talked about our daughters. That's
what we would talk about. Both of us were divorced,
and we talked about the power of being a dad and the
strong connection of a dad and his girl. Then once we
got home, we started bawling."

Pipeline Explodes At Takwa Bay

Suspected vandals have punctured the pipeline at
Takwa Bay area of Lagos State.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of
the National Emergency Management Agency
(NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, the explosion
occurred in the night around 12:00 midnight.
Farinloye said, "Valves and supplies have been
shut down to suffocate the fire already. Safety
officials from NNPC Atlas Cove base are already
working to put out the fire."
He added that, "as a follow up to capsized boat
yesterday, the missing body of the victim of the
boat mishap at Tin Can Island have been
recovered this morning and handed over to the
family members accordingly."

President Jonathan, First Lady Mourns Akunyili

President Goodluck Jonathan has described the
former Minister of Information, and erstwhile
Director-General, National Agency for Food and
Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC),
Professor (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, as a
distinguished citizen and patriot.
This is even as the First Lady, Dame Patience
Jonathan, described the late Minister as a
"Titan" who left an indelible mark with the
passion and conviction with which she served
the nation. She described the late Akunyili’s
departure as, “A great loss to the nation and the
womenfolk.”
Akunyili was reported to have passed on, on
Saturday at an Indian hospital where she has
been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed
ailment.
President Media Aide Dr Reuben Abati in Press
statement said the President received with
shock and sadness, news of her sudden and
untimely demise.
"The President believes that Professor Akunyili
will live long in the memories of those who
were privileged to know her as a diligent
professional, a public-spirited and forthright
public officer, and as a person of great
convictions.
"President Jonathan considers her contributions
to nation-building while she served as the
Director-General of the National Agency for
Food and Drug Administration and Control
(NAFDAC), and as Minister of Information and
Communications, particularly invaluable.
"The President states that it is sad that her
death has come at a time she was making
further efforts to help sustain and strengthen
the unity and stability of the country in her
capacity as a member of the on-going National
Conference. Without any doubt, she will be
greatly missed.
"President Jonathan commiserates with the
Akunyili family, the government and people of
Anambra State, members of the National
Conference and all her loved ones.
"He prays that the Almighty in His infinite
mercies will grant them the fortitude to bear the
irreparable loss of this truly distinguished
citizen and patriot" the statement reads.
Meanwhile the first lady also condoling the
Akunyilis said “Words cannot adequately
express the shock and deep sadness I feel on
receiving this news.”
Dame Jonathan observed that the late Akunyili
demonstrated that if given the opportunity,
women can make a difference as evident from
her glowing career as an internationally
renowned pharmacist, respected academic and
distinguished administrator.
She called late Professor Akunyili, “A bright and
shining star,” saying that, “While we mourn her
loss, we offer thanksgiving to God for her
sojourn on this mortal earth and for her service
to the nation and humanity.”
The First Lady prayed for the Almighty in his
infinite mercy, to grant her gentle soul, peaceful
repose in the bosom of her creator and also
prayed for God to console the immediate and
extended family members.
